I posted something on one of my other blogs today, but I will go into more detail about it here since this is more of a traffic/SEO blog…
I was chatting on Skype last night with a fellow marketer who got over 50k visitors to his site in one DAY.
That of course was rare for him, because he usually gets “only” hundreds, not thousands of visitors a day.
How did he do it?
Simply by writing blog posts, getting them indexed, and writing articles….
No fancy SEO stuff, linkbuilding strategies or anything like that…just writing well, writing frequently, and by following a plan and sticking to it…
Blogging, article marketing, some social bookmarking, and that’s it…
How he did it:
He took the long-term approach towards his SEO, he wrote about general topics and optimized his blog posts and articles for general terms.
In other words he didn’t go after long-tail keywords and wasn’t totally concerned about rankings for each of his posts. Instead he realized that if he wrote for his audiece and wrote well and when he wrote for his audience, he used general terms.
Now me, on the other hand, I want extremely targeted traffic so I write for long tail traffic usually, like writing product reviews and such, but the downside to that is you’ll only get long-tail traffic and that never really adds up.
However, my long-tail traffic converts well,
But. if you write for general terms, in the long run you will get more traffic, which adds more SEO weight to whatever it is you write about, and if there’s a term you absolutely much rank well for, then get links to it.
It’s not hard to get page 1 rankings when you have a pretty robust site that gets a lot of traffic anyways.
The best mix seems to be to target long-tail keywords when reviewing products, and to use more generic terms when writing about niche interests.
